Unfortunately, sometimes the limitations of the monochrome LCD prevent I you from enjoying this game completely. For example, the information bar is often hard to read if the contrast or lighting isn't in sync.
Spider-Man 2 sticks to the comic story line and weaves a web-busting challenge. Spider-Man fans will get their wallcrawling high, but only true superheroes need apply! When a mega-hit movie such as Spiderman 2 makes its video game debut, honestly I have little expectations other then a simple action game with weak gameplay. Activision however had other plans, shattering that mold with innovative gameplay, a plot that drifts far enough to not give the same story as the movie, and a great physics engine that creates realistic movements especially when swinging though the city.
Spiderman 2 isn't problem free but those issues are generally overwhelmed. Spiderman 2 is a classic third person perspective action game with one major difference. Instead of a linear experience, now the whole city of Manhattan has been opened up similar to a Grand Theft Auto format.
Now as you head off to complete a mission, you'll find the opportunity to stop and help citizens in distress. Stopping is up to you, however experience points are given for completing the side-missions which can be used to upgrade Spiderman's abilities a nice RPG touch.
Swinging through Manhattan is an experience in itself as well. There's something about fearlessly jumping off the side of a building, leaping from rooftop to rooftop almost out of control. Spiderman 2 was able to capture a real sense of the power and distance required and adds an amazingly realistic feel. It's quite clever and works well with the game's overall dynamic. Spidey himself also looks pretty good for a blue and red cluster of pixels. He moves with a deliberate grace that at first surprised me, that and the ease in which he is controlled.
And speaking of controls, the title really doesn't rely heavily on the touch pad, more D-pad controls then anything. Sure there are a couple of scenarios that require you to whip out the stylus and begin slashing at the screen with wild abandon, but not enough for me personally. Other then that, there is a surprising amount of moves that Spider-man can do in this title. Now the game is loosely based on the actual Spider-man 2 movie, only expanding on several of the non existent scenes.
Each of the game's 16 levels involves completing specific requirements in order to complete the level. One level may have you defeating a certain amount of bad guys, where another has you rescuing people from a burning building. Not an entirely original idea, but the game is a bit above being just average. At the end of the day Spider-man 2 is a decent game, better then the PSP version only because it does try to expand the gameplay by utilizing the DS's touch pad.
I would say fans of ol' Spidey will want this one, as will gamers who really like action titles. Otherwise, the game could be rented and beaten in a weekend.
